There's Always a Need for Bikes for Kids

OLD SAYBROOK — Dave Fowler has a lot of bikes.
He has unicycles. He has a tiny circus bike. He has tricycles. He has mountain bikes and road bikes. He has a fleet of pink Huffys. He has a 1948 Whizzer gasoline-powered bike awaiting restoration in his office.
In a warehouse in Old Saybrook, there are about 500 bikes of various shapes and sizes, all waiting for the organization that Fowler runs — Bikes for Kids — to give them new homes.
"We've got 200 in a warehouse in Wallingford waiting to come down," Fowler said this past week. "I have another 60 over my mom's garage, and she's got another 40 in her tool shed that I didn't tell her about yet." Well, now she knows.
